What zoning is
A normal mattress is equally firm across its surface. A zoned mattress varies: typically softer under the shoulders, firmer under the waist and hips, and sometimes softer again under the legs. Makers do it two ways. Foam zoning cuts or combines foams of different firmness within a layer. Coil zoning uses stiffer coils, or more of them, in the middle of the bed.
Makers count zones differently (three, five, seven), and the number says little on its own. What matters is whether the middle of the bed is firmer than the top. On each card we quote the maker's own description.
Does it help back pain?
There is little independent research on zoning itself. The logic is sound: it addresses the most common way a mattress fails a sore back, which is letting the pelvis sink. We treat zoning as a useful feature for lower back pain and for side sleepers, not as a guarantee.
