The short answer: Look for medium-firm with support concentrated under the waist. The Helix Midnight Luxe does it with zoned lumbar coils, the Casper Original Hybrid with zoned foam at a lower price, the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm with zoned coils, and the Avenco SyncDeep with zoned lumbar springs at a budget price. Stomach sleepers should go firmer: the Serta iComfort Elana Firm.

What a sore lower back needs from a bed
When you lie down, the heaviest part of you is the pelvis. On a mattress that is too soft, or one that has worn a dip, the hips sink further than the chest and the lower spine bends into a shallow hammock. Hold that for seven hours and it is not surprising that you wake up stiff just above the belt.
Two features fight that. The first is overall firmness in the medium-firm range, which is what the research on chronic low back pain most consistently favors. The second is zoning: a mattress that is deliberately firmer under the waist and hips than under the shoulders. Zoning lets a bed feel soft enough at the shoulder for side sleeping without letting the pelvis drop. It is not magic, and makers describe it in different ways, so on each card we quote the maker's wording rather than inventing our own.
Helix Midnight Luxe (Queen)
The bed many other back-pain lists rank first, now sold on Amazon: a 6-out-of-10 hybrid with a zoned lumbar section and a soft Euro top.
Why it is here: Helix lists targeted zoned lumbar support in the coil layer, a 6-out-of-10 feel and a soft Euro top. That puts more push under the waist than at the shoulder, which is what a sore lower back wants, especially if you sleep on your side.

By sleep position
- Back sleepers with lower back pain often feel a gap between the small of the back and the mattress. A medium-firm surface plus a thin pillow under the knees closes it. The lumbar pillows page covers the pillow route.
- Side sleepers need the shoulder to sink in so the spine stays straight from neck to tailbone. Zoned beds help most here. More in side sleepers with back pain.
- Stomach sleepers arch the lower back on anything soft. Firm is the rule; see stomach-sleeper picks.
If the pain also runs into your hip or leg
Pain that sits in the lower back but also wraps into the buttock or runs down one leg is a different conversation. The bed advice shifts slightly toward pressure relief at the hip, which is covered on mattresses for sciatica and back and hip pain. Leg symptoms are also worth showing a doctor.
Before you order: reader questions
What type of mattress is best for lower back pain?
A medium-firm mattress, ideally with firmer support under the waist and hips (zoning). Hybrids and dense foam beds can both work. Stomach sleepers usually need firmer; light side sleepers slightly softer.
Is memory foam bad for lower back pain?
Not if it is firm enough. Soft memory foam can let the hips sink; a firmer foam bed such as the Nectar Classic (firm) or Serta iComfort Elana works well for many back and stomach sleepers.
Does zoned support really help lower back pain?
There is little independent research on zoning specifically. The idea is sound: it keeps the pelvis from sinking while letting the shoulder settle. Treat it as a useful feature, not a guarantee.
Should I put a pillow under my knees for lower back pain?
Many back sleepers find a thin pillow under the knees takes strain off the lower back. It is free to try tonight.
