Helix Midnight Luxe review: the list-topper, now on Amazon

Other back-pain rankings put this bed first and send you to Helix's own site. It is on Amazon now, sold by the maker's storefront. Here is what the listing says, where it contradicts itself, and who should buy it.

Our verdict: best for side sleepers with lower back pain

The bed many other back-pain lists rank first, now sold on Amazon: a 6-out-of-10 hybrid with a zoned lumbar section and a soft Euro top.

6/10 firmness · Hybrid

  • Sold by the maker's own Amazon store
  • 365-night trial, per the bullets
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Zoned support

The short answer: Buy it if you sleep on your side or switch between side and back, weigh roughly 130 to 230 lb, and your lower back is where it hurts. Skip it if you sleep on your stomach, need a firm bed, or want one clear trial length before you pay; the listing gives two.

Our verdict: best for side sleepers with lower back pain

Helix Midnight Luxe (Queen)

The bed many other back-pain lists rank first, now sold on Amazon: a 6-out-of-10 hybrid with a zoned lumbar section and a soft Euro top.

Why it is here: A medium 6 out of 10 with zoned lumbar coils and a soft Euro top. The shoulder and hip get somewhere to go and the waist stays up, which is the combination side sleepers with a sore lower back need.

Good fit if

You sleep on your side or roll between side and back, your lower back aches by morning, and you want a cushioned top without the middle sagging.

Look elsewhere if

You sleep on your stomach or weigh well over 230 lb; a 6 is too soft for that. Also skip it if a tight budget matters more than the extras.

What the Helix Midnight Luxe is

The Midnight Luxe is Helix's side-sleeper hybrid in its upgraded form. The listing describes five layers in all: a quilted Euro top (TENCEL on the standard version, a cool-to-the-touch GlacioTex cover on the cooling version), three foam layers for pressure relief, pocketed coils with a zoned lumbar section and a reinforced perimeter, and a dense foam base. The queen is 13.5 inches tall. Helix rates the feel 6 out of 10, with 10 the firmest, and calls it medium.

On Amazon it is sold by 3Z Brands, which the listing names as the manufacturer, in sizes from Twin XL to California King. Each size comes in two versions, TENCEL top or GlacioTex cover, under separate ASINs.

How the Helix Midnight Luxe handles back pain

Two things on this bed matter for a sore back. The first is the zoning. Helix describes targeted zoned lumbar support in the coil layer: the springs under your waist are set up to push back harder than the ones under your shoulders. Lying on your side, the shoulder sinks into the Euro top while the waist is held level, so the spine stays closer to straight. It is the same idea as the Casper Original, done in the coils rather than the foam.

The second is the feel. A 6 sits at the soft end of medium-firm, which is right for most side sleepers and for back sleepers of average weight, and a little soft for anyone who sleeps face-down. If your pain sits between the shoulder blades, the thick top helps. If it sits low and you sleep mostly on your back, a 6 with lumbar zoning is still a reasonable call, though the Leesa Original Hybrid (6–8 by its maker) is firmer.

Who the Helix Midnight Luxe suits

  • Side sleepers with lower back pain, the group Helix designed it for.
  • Combination sleepers who start on their back and end on their side: pocketed coils and a reinforced edge make rolling over easier than on deep foam.
  • Hot sleepers willing to pay extra for the GlacioTex version.
  • Couples of similar build: the listing describes limited motion transfer and a reinforced perimeter.

Who should skip the Helix Midnight Luxe

  • Stomach sleepers. A 6 lets the hips drop. Look at our stomach-sleeper picks.
  • Heavier sleepers over about 230 lb, who push through comfort layers faster; the Helix Plus is built for that.
  • Budget shoppers. At our check it was among the most expensive mattresses we rank. The DreamCloud Premier costs much less and suits many of the same people, minus the zoning.

What the Helix Midnight Luxe listing leaves out

Trial length is the big one. The bullet points promise a 365-night sleep trial; the spec table on the same page says 120 nights. We have seen the same split on another bed from this storefront, the Plank Firm Luxe. Before you order, use Amazon's question link to ask the seller which one applies to an Amazon purchase, and keep the reply.

The coil count varies too. The standard queen's spec table lists 500 coils, the GlacioTex queen's lists 1,000, and the bullets say up to 1,000 depending on size. The zoning claim is identical on both. The warranty is listed as limited lifetime; with any lifetime warranty, what counts as a defect matters more than the word "lifetime", and the listing does not spell that out.

TENCEL or GlacioTex?

Both versions share the same coils, foams, zoning and 6-out-of-10 rating. The difference is the top. TENCEL is a quilted pillow-top fabric Helix says is designed for airflow; GlacioTex is a cover meant to feel cool when you lie down. If you sleep hot, the GlacioTex version is the one to look at, and it was the pricier of the two at our check. If you do not, the TENCEL version gives you the same support.
