Helix Plus review: built for heavier bodies

Most mattresses are designed around an average-weight sleeper. The Helix Plus is designed around a heavier one, and its listing says so in numbers.

Our verdict: best for heavier sleepers

Helix's plus-size bed, built for heavier sleepers who bottom out on ordinary bed-in-a-box mattresses.

6–7/10 firmness · Hybrid

  • Sold by the maker's own Amazon store
  • 120-night home trial
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Zoned support

The short answer: Buy it if you or your partner weigh over about 230 lb and want a bed that will not bottom out. Skip it if you are light; the extra support will feel firm.

What the Helix Plus is

An 11.5-inch hybrid with a TENCEL quilted Euro top, memory foam, and an upgraded coil system (800 coils in the queen) with extra reinforcement under the hips and shoulders. The bullet points describe it as medium firm; the spec table says medium. The listing gives a 120-night trial, a limited lifetime warranty and a 1,000 lb limit.

How the Helix Plus handles back pain

For heavier sleepers, back pain often comes from the bed giving way under the pelvis. The Plus addresses that with more coils and reinforcement where the load is greatest. The Euro top keeps it from feeling hard.

Who should skip the Helix Plus

  • Lighter sleepers: the support system is tuned for more weight and will feel firmer than "medium" suggests.
  • Anyone who wants a long trial: 120 nights is shorter than the 365 offered by several others.

Helix Plus or Midnight Luxe?

The Helix Midnight Luxe tops several back-pain lists, and since our October 30 check it is on Amazon too, sold by the same 3Z Brands storefront. It is a different bed for a different sleeper: softer (6 out of 10 by the maker), zoned for the lower back, and aimed at side sleepers and people who toss and turn. If you weigh over about 230 lb, the Plus is still the Helix to look at. If you are average weight and sleep on your side, read our Helix Midnight Luxe review.

Good fit if

You need a firm bed, weigh more, or share the bed and want the coil layer to keep the surface level.

Look elsewhere if

You want any real softness on top. Even the 'medium-firm' side is firm by most people's standards.

Helix Plus: what readers ask

What is the weight limit of the Helix Plus?

The Amazon listing gives 1,000 lb.

Is the Helix Plus good for back pain?

For heavier sleepers, yes; it is built to resist sinking, which is a common cause of morning back pain in heavier bodies.

We write about mattresses, not diagnoses. Numbness, leg weakness, bladder or bowel changes, or pain after a fall are reasons to see a doctor, not reasons to shop. Full disclaimer.
